In answering the call, a catechist becomes a witness to the faith by sharing his/her faith commitment through word, worship, service experience and prayer. In making a commitment, the catechist becomes responsible for:
Continuing their spiritual development through taking time to nourish their own personal relationship with the Lord;
Becoming aware of and faithfully attempting to witness and teach only authentic Church teachings;
Continuing their own personal educational development through attendance at courses and workshops;
Attending all class sessions and any other in-service required by the parish and the Diocese of Austin, preparing lessons and organizing age-appropriate materials needed for class activities;
Providing a positive classroom atmosphere;
Evaluating regularly their own teaching techniques, being sensitive to cultural differences and special needs of students;
Collaborating with and affirming parents as the primary educators of their children's faith formation.
In order to complete the Level 1 Certification Program, a catechist must complete "Getting Started as a Catechist," "Role of the Catechist," and Person of the Catechist." These classes were available at the beginning of our program in September 2013. Some of our catechists did complete these classes. The classes will be available again at the end of 2014 for those who were unable to attend.
Continuing our Level 1 Certification is being made available in Waco beginning January 11, 2014. Please note the dates and call the rectory (254-753-0146) to register with Cathy Smith. St. Mary's parish will pay the $10.00 fee (for supplies and lunch) but you must register a week before the class so they will have enough supplies and lunches available. Please make every effort to attend these classes.
