In September of 2019, Pope Francis dedicated the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time as “The Sunday of the Word God”, occurring this year on January 24.
You are encouraged to read the Sunday Gospel as a family, and listen for words or phrases that catch your attention. Then pause a few moments, and read the gospel a second time a bit more slowly and prayerfully, again listening for words and phrases.
Discuss the following questions as a family:
What words or phrases spoke to you? Often, it is the Holy Spirit speaking to you through these phrases. What do you think the Holy Spirit is saying?
Jesus passed Simon and Andrew, James and John and invited them to follow him to “become fishers of men.” How does Jesus call me to follow? Where am I resistant?
How is Jesus’ call to you good news? What difference does it make in your life?
Have you ever thought of yourself as a fisher of people and told others about Jesus and the Kingdom of God?
Consider spending 5 minutes each day to read from one of the Gospels, perhaps Mark which is the shortest. Listen for words or phrases that attract you. Then spend 10 minutes in simple silent prayer, being in the presence of God. Listen for God’s whisper in your heart. How might God unpack those words or phrases?
